In the old days of propeller-driven aircraft, passengers often suffered from earaches after landing. The cause was greatly reduced cabin air pressure during climbing to high altitudes. Modern airliners also reduce the cabin air pressure to a maximum height of 2,450 meters, but this is a much lesser reduction than was earlier the case.

But passengers these days sometimes also suffer from earaches. These occur above all when the balance of pressure between the middle ear and the ambient air pressure fails to function properly. Such complaints arise in particular if a passenger has a cold with swelling of the nose and the passage between the back of the throat and the middle ear (the so-called Eustachian tube). During an aircraft?s climbing after takeoff the cabin has a subpressure, but the middle ear can cope with the overpressure that arises there relatively easily via the Eustachian tube. But when the aircraft descends it is possible that this balance of pressure will be interfered with considerably by the swelling of the mucous membranes. This results in subpressure in the middle ear and a contraction of the eardrums which can be very painful.

Effective measures to balance cabin air pressure

About a half-hour before the aircraft begins to descend from cruising height apply an anti-swelling nose spray to both nostrils. This will free the passages between the nasal sinuses and the middle ear and enable it to balance the difference between its pressure and the ambient air pressure.

In addition, you can accelerate the pressure balance by making chewing movements (or actually chew some gum).

Deliberate yawning also reinforces the pressure balance.

The most important technique to enable a balance of pressure is the so-called Valsalva method. Take a breath, hold your nose, and with your mouth and glottis closed press the air forcefully to the back of your throat. That opens the Eustachian tube and enables a balance between the different pressures.

In the case of serious inflammatory ailments of the nasal sinuses, you should definitely consult your doctor before your flight.

what to do

So if you fly from East to West, such as in the USA, the day gets longer, and this tends to suit the biological rhythm. The human body adjusts to the new time zone about 20 percent faster than after an Eastbound flight, such as from Europe to Thailand, because flying East means it ?loses? several hours.

Try to stay awake during your flight.

Move your body and drink a lot to combat your natural need for sleep.

Eat high-protein food such as cheese, fish, meat, eggs and dairy products. They help you to stay awake.

Some days before your journey try to get accustomed, at least partly, to the new daily rhythm at your destination by going to bed one to two hours later than usual.

Plan your arrival if possible for around noon to use the brightest light of the day.

Plan important appointments or meetings for a time of day when you feel most awake. After a Westbound flight, that means in the morning.

Don?t give in to your feeling of tiredness. Go to bed only when the sun goes down in your destination country.

A lot of light inhibits the production of the hormone melatonin which makes people tired and their organism ready for sleep ? so make sure you get plenty of natural light!

Try to sleep.

Eat carbohydrate-rich foods such as fruit, potatoes, pasta, rice, yogurt, and drink fruit juice. That will stimulate your need for sleep.

Some days before your journey try to adjust to the new daily rhythm at your destination. That means earlier to bed and earlier to rise.

Avoid taking sleeping pills ? autogenic training or relaxation exercises are healthier.

Fruit-flavored tea also has a relaxing and sleep-promoting effect.

Plan important activities for a time of day when you feel most awake. After an Eastbound flight, that means in the evening.

Avoid alcohol as a means to ?make you tired? because it has a stronger effect in the air than on the ground. It dehydrates the body and also delays the human organism?s adjustment to different time zones.

Put your watch back or forward to the time of your destination country as soon as you board your aircraft. This will help you to make a mental adjustment as well to the different daily rhythm awaiting you.

Try to get into the daily rhythm of your destination. That means eating at local mealtimes and not going to bed until after sundown.

Try to get enough sleep during the first night after your arrival.

Avoid strenuous activities as much as possible during the first two days after your arrival so that your body has time to get used to the new time cycle.

Avoid taking sleeping pills and melatonin because they confuse the human organism even more.

Spend as much time as possible in the open air ? daylight helps the body to adjust faster to new environments.

On short trips, you should if possible stick to your usual day-night rhythm. That will prevent ?double jet lag?.

If possible, stay at home for one or two days after you return from your vacation. That will help you to relax while you get used to the daily rhythm in your homeland again.

To avoid having to wait in line at a check-in counter we recommend our eve of flight check-in. You can bring your baggage to the airport with no hassle while your children get a good night's sleep ahead of their big adventure the next day. You'll find more information on this Lufthansa service here. The next day, we recommend you get to the airport about 50 minutes before your scheduled departure time so that you can start your journey relaxed.

Air travel with babies or infants doesn't have to be stressful. When you fly with Lufthansa you can take your baby carriage or buggy right up to your aircraft. So you don't have to hand it in as a baggage item. Shortly before you board the aircraft a flight attendant will take it from you and return it to you after you land.

When you book your flight, reserve front-row seats. There?s space there for special baby beds.

Also when you book, tell our staff or your travel agency that your baby will be flying with you. That will ensure that special baby food will be waiting for you on your aircraft.

Lufthansa offers you the opportunity of wheeling a baby carriage right up to the aircraft door. Our flight attendants will then take it from you, enabling you to board the aircraft with your baby in comfort, and hand it back to you immediately after landing.

When the aircraft is climbing after takeoff or descending to land, give your baby a pacifier or a bottle ? its sucking will help it to balance the changing air pressure.

Lufthansa carries baby food on all its flights. But you shouldn?t forget your baby?s bottle and its favorite food! Our flight attendants will also warm the baby?s bottle, and glasses, too, if you wish. Just ask one of them ? they?ll be glad to help you!

Please note that when you take your baby with you it faces an increased risk of health problems, especially in tropical countries. These include diarrhea and infectious diseases such as malaria, which due to different medical service levels can in individual cases be difficult to treat. In addition, pediatricians warn repeatedly that prophylaxis against malaria can be a problem with infants.

Handling infants aboard an aircraft the right way is important to ensure that air travel is relaxed and kids, above all, have fun on flights. Here are a few tips on how you can prepare your child for the adventure of flying and make it an unforgettable experience for him or her.

Explain to your child how a flight proceeds and what he or she can expect. You could also look together at a picture book or a film on flying. Even better, before your flight take a trip together to the airport where your child can see the flying giants up close and ask questions.

No special safety measures are necessary for children weighing more than 18 kg ? but make sure they are strapped in.

Before takeoff, give your child something to suck or chew. That will help him or her to better balance the change in air pressure. In addition, if your child has a cold give him or her nose drops a half-hour before takeoff and landing.

Please make sure that your child drinks a lot during the flight. We recommend fruit juices, non-carbonated water, or tea. Try to avoid carbonated drinks such as cola because they cause wind and also have a diuretic effect.

Pack nibbles for the flight. We always have tasty tidbits aboard for our small passengers, but nothing can replace a child?s favorite candy bars! They comfort children with a feeling of familiarity amid a new environment.

Please don?t forget thick socks. Because your child?s small feet will swell at a high altitude we recommend that you remove his or her shoes so that they can move around comfortably.

Keep your child occupied during the flight. Pack a coloring book, children?s stories audio cassettes and a cuddly toy. It?s also a good idea before the flight to have your child pack his or her own small rucksack with their favorite playthings. That means they can take a piece of ?home? with them on their long journey. We also have small toys on board to help children pass the time.

The right clothing is also very important. The different climatic conditions aboard can best be balanced by the so-called 'onion look?. That means dressing your child in layers of clothing that can be removed or put back on according to need.

In First and Business Class, children are also given an amenity kit with all kinds of nice surprises.
