searchview appears to be null when placed in actionbar for phones.

No I did something wrong. I didn't set the action view properly in the menu item definition. Once I did that it showed fine in both phones and tablets. Of course your sdk need to be 3.0 or higher or at least set the target sdk to 3.0. If your lower sdk is 11 (3.0) or higher then you don't need the target sdk to see the action bar.

Application level search activity specification no longer allows a star

This used to indicate a global search by default for all activities in this application. This appears to be deprecated.
